Automation vs. Intimacy

We’ve spoken about intimacy a lot; however, there’s a perfect balance between automation and intimacy. Most businesses get this completely wrong. Either they overautomate their sales process, or they overintimacy, and then they can’t afford to operate their business.

Automation as you grow inside of your marketing—specifically with a CRM, follow -ups , and being able to know who is likely your customer (through lead scoring, etc.)—is important.

However, don’t forget this. Most of the time, someone is going to pull the trigger when you follow up. And just because someone says no, it simply means “not today.” The number of people who said no on Friday but yes on Monday probably amounts to millions in sales.

The important thing when you’re looking at how your automation works is to not automate the point of intimacy. That means the moment that someone attempts to talk to someone, allow them to talk to someone.

I believe that bots are great, so are autoresponders; however, they are best used when it allows for the start of intimacy with an actual human being who can help them. Business is helping humans (or, at least, it is in the year 2020) and overautomating any part of your business is going to decrease sales 100 percent of the time.

As with most things in business, I’m never going to tell you that I know everything. That isn’t true. When it comes to sales, I’ve always used really great marketing to make it easy. I’m not the guy who can make anyone buy anything. I don’t use scripts. I don’t use crazy NLP. I don’t overpromise.

My belief in sales is simple. Get someone to believe in the future version of themselves. Further, my belief is that if sales is salesy, it will just result in a high refund rate, a low success rate, or a business that eventually will fall apart.

If there’s one lesson that The Wolf of Wall Street can teach you, don’t sell crap, which leads me to the next most important pillar: your product.
